Job Description

AFGRI is offering an exciting apprenticeship training program at various branches in South Africa. We are seeking dynamic, self-motivated individuals with the necessary technical abilities who wish to qualify as Artisans. This Apprenticeship Program provides the opportunity for growth within AFGRI under the mentorship of our leaders, alongside informal training and on-the-job development rotations in multidisciplinary teams.

This apprenticeship will span 3 years of in-service training, aiming for a qualification as a Tractor or Earthmoving Mechanic. The initial 6 months serve as a probation period for both the company and the apprentice to ensure a long-term fit. Either party may withdraw during this period without any consequences. After this, the apprentice will be bound by an AFGRI contract and begin formal training. This training includes:

  • Practical training phases at a Training Institute, if required.
  • Enrollment in N subjects at a college through distance learning, if needed, including Saturday classes.
  • Product training at the John Deere Training Facility in Boksburg and other suppliers, as well as internal training by AFGRI specialists.

The training incurs no costs to the apprentice if passed; however, any failed training must be redone at the apprentice’s own expense. All apprentices are bound by a 3-year contract with AFGRI, and any withdrawal within the apprenticeship period or “work-back period” will incur costs, calculated based on the time and phase of withdrawal. Apprentices are expected to work back the time it took them to qualify. The contract cannot extend beyond 4 years; if not qualified within this period, the contract expires.

  • Training to become a Mechanic/Technician.
  • Repair and maintenance of related equipment.
  • Stock control responsibilities.
  • Customer service.
  • General workplace tasks.

Minimum Requirements

  • Valid Driver’s license.
  • Communication skills.
  • Administrative skills.
  • Computer literacy.
  • N2 subjects:
  • Mathematics.
  • Engineering Science.
  • Diesel Trade Theory.
  • Plus one of the following:
    • Industrial Electronics.
    • Engineering/Technical Drawing.
    • Motor Trade Theory.
  • Mathematics (Not Literacy).
  • Technical Mathematics (Not Literacy).
  • Physical Science.
  • Technical Science.
  • Engineering Graphics and Design.
